Dawn has been a familiar face at Shear Class, first as a client, then as the salon coordinator, then as an apprentice and now as a licensed cosmetologist. She's likely to be the sunny voice on the telephone when you call for an appointment or the person handing you a hot cup of fresh brewed coffee while you're under the dryer. But now she's available for manicures and pedicures, haircuts and colors.
Its all about personality and style with Dawn, who retired from her first career in meteorology several years ago to spend more time with her family. After working four year as salon coordinator, Dawn said, "I was inspired to follow in (salon owner ) Shelley Danis' footsteps and apprentice my way into being a full-time stylist.
"It's the next step in my work life. I like to make people happy. I've been a client here, a salon coordinator and hopefully as a stylist, I'll be able to use all those experiences to give my clients the best service possible."
Taylor's face has been seen around the salon since it opened, being a jack-of-all-trades to help the stylists. She is the third generation of women pursuing her career in cosmetology. Like mom, Shelley, and nana, Penny, she loves to make people feel and look like rock stars and divas and what better way could she express that than to become a stylist herself.
"The salon is like my second home. I grew up coming here with Nana, styling and cutting mannequin hair, getting to know the people coming here, and ultimately loving this industry."
She is now a junior stylist at Shear Class and she also offers make-up application services for any occasion.
Shelley, owner of Shear Class in Hudson, New Hampshire, has been a stylist for over 10 years, starting her career as an apprentice in the salon.
"Having several teachers and one-on-one training has given me the great opportunity to recieve the best technical skills from each instructor. Owning the salon has been one of my greatest challenges and accomplishments and has helped me grow in ways I coud never have imagined. I am happiest creating texture in hair with color and cutting techniques. I love helping clients feel better about themselves by looking their best.
My goal as a stylist is to help people look and feel their best. It's what I want when I go to a salon and it's what I do for my clients."
Nadine has a 17-year career in hair styling and design and she has been a member of the team at Shear Class for 13 wonderful years.
"I love everything about my job- seeing the difference in people's attitudes when they get their hare done. I especially love working with color. A person's hair color reflects their whole personality. It can be subtle, bold or trendy, depending on your mood. Color is something you can always change and have instant results. It's an easy fix and an easy lift.
When I go to a salon, I expect a stylist to listen to what I tell them. I listen carefully to my clients' needs. I offer change and suggestion, but ultimately, the client has the final say.
As manager, one of my responsibilities is to look for classes the other stylists should take so that they can further their education. These classes will keep us on the cutting edge of style, technique and fashion. Taking business classes has made me a better communicator and being a better communicator makes me a better stylist.
Liane has been a stylist for over 20 years.
"I love this job! It's so rewarding- making people look and feel good about themselves."
One of Liane's favorite things is color. What sets her apart from the other stylists at Shear Class is that she has also been a nail technician for 20 years, being the only stylist in the salon to do acrylic nails and nail designs.
"Continuing my education is very important. Keeping up with the latest styles and trends is essential in this business."
